Dual MD Program
This dual degree program offered through Georgetown University School of Medicine and the Department of Philosophy allows students to pursue either an MA or PhD in philosophy while earning an MD. The program is only available to students pursuing their medical degree at the Georgetown Medical School. Students wishing to apply to the dual degree program should consult the Medical School’s admissions page for information about applying to the MD program. The Philosophy curriculum and requirements include:
- 45 credits in philosophy required for the PhD
- 30 credits for the MA or 24 credits with a master’s thesis
All students are required to take the GRE and MCAT exams. Up to nine credits for medical school courses may also be counted towards the PhD in philosophy, up to six credits towards the MA.
Please note: these programs require two applications, one to the School of Medicine and one to the Graduate School. Please visit the website for the respective program for more information on how to apply.
Students in the MD/MA and MD/PhD programs, along with all graduate students in the Philosophy Department, also have the opportunity to participate in the Visiting Scholars Program at Phoebe R. Berman Bioethics Institute at Johns Hopkins University and the Department of Clinical Bioethics at the National Institutes of Health. Through this program students interested in public health may enroll in courses at Johns Hopkins University in areas pertinent to their Philosophy degree, such as epidemiology, health policy, health economics, cost and risk-benefit analysis, cost effectiveness, health care resource allocation, public health law, and international health, which are not necessarily emphasized at Georgetown. Registration for Johns Hopkins courses may be done at Georgetown, and so long as the student’s credits for a semester do not exceed the maximum allowed at Georgetown for any one semester, all fees for courses taken at Johns Hopkins are included in Georgetown tuition.
