| The Georgetown University Critical Theory Society The Critical Theory Society is a group of students at Georgetown University that explores a wide range of contemporary critical political, social, economic and aesthetic thought. We are an open society that aims to foster interdisciplinary synergy. Furthermore, the Society
Our exploration of critical theory is, fundamentally, an exploration of how we can both describe and create a just and free world. As long as we describe society in ways that replicate existing power dynamics and uncritically reinforce current systems of racial, economic, sexual and other privilege, we cannot develop a more just, peaceful and free society. Our goal is to develop new, accurate, egalitarian, inclusive discourses about the various worlds around us, and we firmly believe that constant critical engagement with how we think is a necessary element of this project. The Critical Theory Society draws on a wide range of theoretical schools of thought (including, but not limited to, contemporary continental philosophy, postcolonial theory, queer theory, feminist theory, (post)Marxism, poststructuralism, and deconstruction) to explore these issues, as we believe it is only through a diverse and interdisciplinary background that this dynamic discussion can fruitfully occur. The Society effectively encourages graduate and undergraduate students from an array of disciplines to take part in this discussion and to think about and interact with the world in new ways. Our bi-weekly meetings, undergraduate journal, cultural events and lecture series all contribute to the development of an intellectual environment that encourages a critical approach toward politics and social thought and, hopefully, produce students and teachers who are more aware of the implications of their own imaginings of the world. Critical Theory Society meetings are held bi-weekly and board meetings are held weekly; location and times vary. For more information about meetings and membership or to request a subscription to our email list, please contact Clark Donley. Officers: | ||||||||
